Just about six months ago when I came to UTSC as Interim Principal, many of us were just getting comfortable with the word “semi-centennial.”

It's a tongue twister. Now “semi-centennial, 50th Anniversary and Golden Jubilee” are part of our campus lexicon as the celebration of UTSC’s coming of age, a milestone for the University, continues through the end of this calendar year.

Already the anniversary has added special importance to annual events such as Spring Reunion and Orientation; still to come are enhanced versions of Fall Campus Day, Convocation, Academic Awards and the Scholarship Reception. Much more will be happening to mark the anniversary including the move to the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre, an enormously significant development for our campus and the community. As a lifelong champion of sport, health and wellness, you can imagine that I am ecstatic to welcome this development during the anniversary year.

We’ve talked to alumni, faculty, staff and students as we compiled the timeline and the features of this magazine, and it’s clear how much UTSC means to the people who have spent time here and live and work in the eastern GTA. This commemorative issue of the magazine celebrates UTSC’s 50-year legacy with a look back at the people, places and programs that have shaped the transformation of the campus into the educational innovator, research engine, environmental exemplar, and athletic and cultural precinct that it has become today, and the fellowship, distinction and aspirations that frame its promise for the future.
