UTSC @ 50
The UTSC story began 50 years ago, at a time when Canada was experiencing the coming of age of the post-WWII baby boom generation. The University of Toronto recognized that new campuses, one in Scarborough and one in Mississauga, were ideal places to expand academic offerings and serve the growing number of young, ambitious Canadians wishing to fulfill their dreams of higher education.
Today, the Scarborough campus continues to build on that original vision and remains uniquely accessible, innovative and inclusive.
UTSC is a campus committed to student-centred intellectual and academic development, cutting-edge research, community building and a healthy respect for the environment and the lush Rouge River green lands that protectively envelop the campus. UTSC is where city meets green space, campus meets community and where the richness of a multicultural, multinational and multilingual student population seamlessly complement our neighbouring communities specifically, and the greater, diverse tapestry of Canada in general.
Just as when we broke ground in the 1960s, UTSC remains a warm and welcoming community of learners, where excellence in research and undergraduate success go hand in hand. Faculty and students learn, work and connect with scholarly and neighbouring communities in ways that expand and enhance the traditional structural boundaries of higher education.
UTSC offers a comprehensive range of undergraduate and graduate-level programs taught by world leaders in their fields. Our nearly 12,000 students come from around the world, bringing unparalleled diversity to campus, and a natural affinity and ability for giving back on a local, national and global scale. Scarborough itself is one of the most multicultural communities in Canada.
Our learning culture is nimble, always fresh and continually rejuvenating itself by combining academic excellence with experiential education. We remain a student-centred urban campus. As we embark on our next 50 years, UTSC will continue to provide innovative, inclusive and accessible multidisciplinary academic education to growing numbers of the best and brightest students from Canada and throughout the world.
